New home? Register online.

Anyone who has moved into a new home must register as soon as possible. This also applies to changes of address within the city. According to the Federal Registration Act, you must register within 14 days of moving house. Deregistration at the previous place of residence is not required.

With electronic residence registration, the registration of your new residence is done digitally.  You notify the authorities of your new place of residence via the online service and can also update your identity card or eID card. To use the online service, you need to set up a user account via the online ID function. The easiest way to use the online ID function is via smartphone. To do this, install the “AusweisApp”. Also have your 6-digit personal PIN ready.

The electronic residence registration:

In addition to individual registrations, registrations in the family group are also possible. The prerequisite is that all persons are already linked in the population register and move together from one apartment to a new one. This applies to married and partnered persons as well as their minor children.

After you have logged in with your user account, the online service starts and you will first receive information on data protection. The online service directs you to the ID Card App "AusweisApp". The identification in the online service using the online ID function triggers the retrieval of the registration data from the population register. If spouses/civil partners and/or minor children are registered at the same address, this will be recognized and registration can be made in the family unit. Persons who move along can be selected, and the corresponding data records from the population register are displayed for verification. You have the option of making settings for passing on your registration data. You then enter the address of your new flat and when you moved into your new flat. If you are renting, for example, you will also need information about your landlord. In this case, please also upload your landlord's confirmation. Before you finally send your data to the responsible registration authority, you can check your information again.

A summary of your data is available for download in the online service. Your data will be checked and processed by the competent registration authority. Once this is done, you will automatically receive an email message.

Go back to the service and sign in with your user account. Now you can complete your residence registration: A forgery-proof digital registration confirmation with an electronic seal is available in the online service. To update your address data on the ID card, the online service redirects you to the AusweisApp and updates the address data stored on the chip of the ID card (possible for all ID cards and eID cards with online ID function). After the chip has been updated, the new address stickers for the ID card will automatically be sent to the new registration address by postal letter from Bundesdruckerei. As proof of authenticity, these are provided with a special security code. If you have moved to another municipality, residence stickers for valid passports will also be sent without application. This step is not necessary for eID cards.
